Sustainable tourism

The Sudwindsports base in St.Pierre-la-Mer, France, is situated in the protected natural area of « Etang de Pissevaches ». This natural site was created by former estuary of the river Aude, nowadays entering the Mediterranean Sea at the village of Cabanes de Fleury. A marsh land type of vegetation and wildlife characterises this area, with many canals and salt water lakes.
Our windsurfing and sailing activities take place on the Etang de Pissevaches and our activity therefore has a direct impact on the natural environment.

While creating commercial activity in this area we try to make as little impact as is possible on the natural environment, as we realise the importance of this natural area for the sustainability of the environment and of our business. The beautiful, tranquil and unspoilt landscape of Pissevaches is one of the main reasons why our clients choose to come out to do water sports activities with Sudwindsports.

The seaside resort of St.Pierre-la-Mer has, for several years, been rewarded the Pavillon Bleu or “Blue Flag” eco label for clean beaches and marinas. Our kitesurfing and catamaran activities take place directly on a Blue Flag beach.

To maintain our surrounding areas, here are a few examples of what we do:

• whenever possible we try to use our rescue boats as little as possible, without of course endangering the safety of our clients.
• Push buttons are installed on all taps in public areas in toilets and showers to avoid spillage
• The bar area is equipped with a can crusher to be able to collect cans separate from other waste and to reduce the volume of waste
• A request has been made to the community for more waste bins on the beach and near the lake.
• Clients and staff at the centre are educated on what effects we have on the environment and how we can reduce our impacts
