What happens if you don’t want to get wet?

Mrs Jones enjoying L'oeil DouxThe mountain range of La Clape, the backdrop of St Pierre, offers an interesting venue for hill walking, mountain biking, horse riding and even rock climbing. In between the many vineyards you can take a walk or cycle to L’Oeil doux, the geological mystery of the hole in the ground not far from the Centre. Or make your way up to the viewpoint at the Auzils Chapel where hundreds of votive pictures can be seen to remember local sailors who died at sea.

Mountain biking

Mountain Biking in the AudeThe area offers oodles of good mountain biking possibilities. Head for the Massif de la Clape where marked routes will take you round a range of landscapes in varying difficulty. Remember that temperatures in July and August can be killing, we advice you to leave early and be back before noon. And don’t forget, if you have that "mud, sweat and gears" mentality the Pyrenees are only a short drive away!

Hiking

The whole of the Languedoc-Roussillon region is criss-crossed with walking routes, local pathways and Grande Randonnée routes. A wide range of beautiful walks through vineyards, hills, along the lakes and past the old Cathar monasteries and castles. The good thing is that most walks are marked, so easy to follow and a small chance of getting lost. Good maps and descriptive booklets can be bought from the local supermarkets.

Horse riding

Camargue horsesThere are plenty of possibilities for horse riding and pony trekking in the area. And it’s not just the beaches that are popular riding places. St Pierre and Fleury d’Aude have a few riding schools and stables that offer wonderful trips with qualified instructors. Riding hats are obligatory and are provided.

Rafting / Canyoning

A two hour drive will take you to the heart of the Pyrenees where spectacular gorges can be explored on rafts or by foot (gorge walking).
